FYI: DSTORAGE.FR (new service), LIVEDRIVE, MYOTHERDRIVE AND DIINO GIVEN ME A PRESS ACCOUNT TO DEEPLY TEST HER OWN OFFERS FOR EVERY OF THESE SERVICES I WAIT THE END OF HER XX DAYS TRIAL TO BE SURE THAT IT IS NOT A HIDDEN TRIAL OFFER ;) FOR DSTORAGE.FR THE COMMERCIAL LAUNCH WILL BE UNKNOWN.
Requirements: trial offer refused, goal is to test regurarly and forever the main service
DIINO is a Java multilingual oriented software rather than backup software and it can be launched on Windows, Mac and Linux systems. The GUI is very nice and easy to understand. Its functions (uploading/downloading folders or files / incremental backup / scheduling backups) are basic and sufficient enough for an archive software. Scheduled tasks are saved remotely but name and path directories disappear if these directories are no longer present :-( The software is launched each time Diinoservice_xp_i386.exe is started, but it is not a windows service that allows for uploading data regardless of the user profile. A license permits use of the software on an unlimited number of computers and also offers decent package for only $5 per month: - 100 GB of storage, - 25 GB of daily transfer, - Sharing of a folder or files (link is available for 7 days and 10 uses). For people (like me) who store OS partitions or big files, uploading and downloading can be done by the browser but resuming cancelled transfers is not possible. It is not very good if you have an unstable Internet connexion. Use of files splitting softwares such as HJSPLIT is an almost mandatory tool to be used with DIINO if your main files are greater than 100 MB. My uploading speed was 60 KB/s while my downloading speed was 700 KB/s. These results are lower than what I had expected. edit February 2010: upload still at 90 KB/s download up to 1600 KB/s :-) I'll end now with a positive point ;) Security (one of the most important points too often forgotten by other reviewers) consisted of the classical SSL standard used for transferring data, the use of a RAID system (i hope RAID1 or greater ;) ), and a daily backup at another physical location. We can see with this small review that DIINO loves easy and secure data for long-term archiving but is slower compared to its competitors. (Thanks AL and Michael to check my english grammar ;)
For 5$ per month and for 100 GB of storage data, you have: - archive and sync (differential backup), - sharing file and/or folders, - receive comments of your publics documents, - optional preview images, - direct URL download from external links (very nice!). For the last function explained above, i have tried with a big 650 Mo ISO file but the download seems loops forever without any progression messages. After manually forcing the close of the software, the ISO file was well present when i has restarted the program... I have appreciated MD5 publication of every files, remaining time in upload (not in download mode ?!), e-mail sent whatever the state of the progress (of course the process must have been started before) and also the import mode of every files of two of his competitors ;) Else, i was very surprised than scheduled backups on XP Home (Vista and W7 Home version too ?) are not directly managed by the software itself but manual launch is always possible. Upload are about 90 KB/s (my DSL line accepts 100 KB/s) and 450 KB/s for download. Result are good enough. edit February 2010: upload was 40 KB/s download stays a 450 KB/s :-( About data security storage, MyOtherDrive uses RAID 6 storage servers and backs up your data offsite in a different facility too. We can see with this small review that MYOTHERDRIVE purpose some amazing functions for a correct price in a secure environnement. REVIEW OF LIVEDRIVE: Ejected. GUI shows too many false informations. REVIEW OF DSTORAGE.FR: Soon HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR BACKUP/ARCHIVE ENTERPRISE ? When i began to find all options of all these competitors, i think to add about 15 characteristics but in fact, i have found more than 30... - Price ;) - VERSION HISTORY DURATION, (a copy of the file you have deleted is kept X days), - IS THIS SERVICE IS A FILE ARCHIVE SERVICE OR/AND A SYNC BACKUP TOOL ? FTP monothread: means you can not upload more than one file in same time. FYI (depending of the FTP service), the transfert is either refused without reason or either it loops forever.

Notice some services can offer proprietary software but i do not privilegiate this kind of services so my document does not follow it for this table ;)

(4) Do not forget this "limited" word is relative because some unlimited services can be so slow that limited service is better than unlimited... A small well known tip (if you do not have a fixed IP) is to reboot your modem to obtain a new IP
(5) For testing services which refuses non-multimedia files, i have created a 100MB unheardable/uncompressable MP3 file which is a horrible mix of two TechnoDance NEXUS group albums, this test file as the original song are on CreativeCommons licence.

Q: Why you do not list services with file history (able to recover old backup data since X days) ?
A: Too many services listed on this document changes every day and gives me a lot of works.
Q: Why you do not speak about GDISK, GSPACE and GMAIL DRIVE here ?
A: I do not like workaround method for storage... and also they are on this list some great and free REAL storage services which can give you the same (or even better) QoS than Google ! Google is not perfect, in 2006 he has destroyed emails forever by error
EDIT ABOUT GOOGLE (February 21 2010): With his new offer launched X months ago, Google officially authorize data * At this date 1 GB of data storage is guaranteed free for all if you use Google Docs interface / if you pay required fees Google guarantee you can storage any files even if you use Gmail as gateway BUT if you do not pay anything, the 7.2 GB offered for Gmail service still give you no legal guarantees but seems tolerated.
Q: Why your FAQ(s) are ugly ?
A: I prefer wasting my time to update documents instead of graphic shemes...
Q: Why you list too many services ? It is really annoying !
A: Because small services *can* be better than big services... I believe that bad-businessplan/unstable services will not stay forever on my list(s) but i totally agree they are too many services which are a "carbon copy" of another service(s) and does not bring news things for users :-X
Q: RAID5 or RAID6 really gives a security ?
A: The calculated guess / unguaranteed risk to losing some datas is about 1 / 3 billion in RAID5 and 1 / 55 billions in RAID 6 (UNVERIFIED NUMBERS I REPEAT AGAIN)

RAID5 with a risk of 3%/year/HD crash = (0.03*((1/365/(1/(24*2)))))*(0.03*((1/365/(1/(24*2)))))
RAID6 with a risk of 3%/year/HD crash = (0.03*(1/365))*(0.03*(1/365))*(0.03*(1/365))
(of course as explained in the google doc, 3% stays a false fixed value coz it depends of HD quality, date of crash (most of crash durates before 6 month and after 2 years) and more and more... i repeat again and again and again all these values are calculated guess !!!
Q: How to do on this list ?
A: Your service must:
- be 100% free or have a free offer,
- be in English (or French ;),
- permit to upload minimum 5 GB per file with 30 days retention after latest download *OR* 100 MB per file with unlimited storage (professionnal services or WebOS with high QoS are added whatever size it offers. Free FTP/WebDaV uploads services can be added too with specific low conditions),
- display all these states quoted below in your main page, TOS or FAQ and do not claim vague things as e.g "Your files will never expire as long as they're often downloaded" because it is sure for me in all case i immediatly forgot your service because i'm not a forecaster sic !
- not sucks ! force to download adwares or answer to surveys to grab wanted file, can not download my tiny test file after upload, refuse extension file after the end of upload, too restrictive conditions or changed restrictions are given after upload or before download, abandonned website, too busy when we wish to download a file (but not enough for displaying ads), purpose space disk lower than promised, create a (c) 2006 when domain name exist since 2008, answers to my mail more than 2 months, does not works under Linux, accept upload and reject files at the end of transfer because disk are full since a lot of months, lot of 404 errors, no email contact excepting the WHOIS ask your twitter/facebook/myspace password, does not warn X weeks before the account, cancellation, explain they use RAIN or RAID without other information, not be a reseller/partner of an another service and more and more... this list grows every month sic !

A: Are you very furious ? It is generally i have REALLY wasted my time with you...

Q: Do you accept partnerships ?
A: I'm only open to win-win offer(s) so do not waste our time to unfair deal(s) as poorly affiliations, "PR 0" link exchange and more and more...
Q: Why you take now a lot of times to add me on the tables you create ?
A: Lot of prehistoric services decrease her offers or disappears in 2010 due to recession. Why a new service created X months ago (and which is in 90% of cases a copy of another excepting the GUI) will not do the same thing as these services ?
